TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Public Works and Housing Ministry (PUPR) is currently constructing the country’s longest underpass, which will span up to 1.3 kilometers, beneath the Kulon Progo Airport in Yogyakarta.
“This longest underpass is part of Java’s Pansela (south coast) National Road where its safety factor is the utmost concern,” said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in a press release in Jakarta on Monday.
The national road network is expected to connect Purwokerto and Yogyakarta since the airport cuts access between the two regions.
“There are ongoing discussions regarding studies to further improve its safety aspects,” said the minister.

According to the PUPR Ministry, the two contractors appointed to oversee its safety aspects' construction and infrastructure are PT WIKA and PT MCM, which must control the project’s cleanliness throughout its construction process.
The underpass kicked off construction in November of 2018 and is currently 30 percent complete, while the deadline is pegged on December 2019. It will spend up to Rp293.18 billion from the 2018-2019 state Sharia Sovereign Bonds (SBSN).
