BMKG Issues Extreme Weather Warning for Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of possible extreme weather for the next three days, from March 14 to 16, 2024. The warning includes moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning strikes and strong winds, as well as high waves in the southern waters of the province.

These weather conditions are expected to occur mainly in the northern cities of Yogyakarta, Sleman, Bantul, Gunungkidul, and Kulon Progo.

“Be cautious of the potential for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, which can trigger hydrometeorological disasters, such as fallen trees, flooding, and landslides,” said Warjono, the head of the BMKG Yogyakarta Meteorological Station, on Wednesday, March 13.

“Also, be aware of the potential for high waves in Yogyakarta's waters, which can reach a height of four meters,” he added.

Since the beginning of this week, high waves have been occurring, causing fishermen in Gunungkidul Regency to refrain from going out to sea.

The BMKG also issued a warning to tourists visiting the coastal area of Yogyakarta. Earlier, it was reported that a foreign tourist from Hungary was swept away by the tide at Ngandong Beach, Tepus, Gunungkidul, on March 12. Fortunately, the rescue team managed to save the foreigner.
