TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X has issued a gubernatorial decree No. 1/instr/2019 on the prevention of potential social conflict after the region was labeled intolerant. The policy was delivered to regents and mayors in the province and took effect starting April 4, 2019.
The Yogyakarta administration lamented a discriminatory regulation applied in Karet hamlet, Pleret Village, Bantul regency. In 2015, the public figures in the hamlet made a deal that barred non-Muslims from residing in the area.
The case was exposed after a Catholic painter was recently told to move from a rented house in the area for being a non-Muslim. Those figures then admitted to being wrong and thus revoked the regulation after many condemned the practice, including the regional administration.

“Just because that tiny mistake, Yogya is labeled intolerant by the public. We are very sorry such regulation existed,” said Yogyakarta regional secretary, Gatot Saptadi, in a press conference on Friday, April 4.
In response to the case, Gatot said the city administration has begun monitoring other similar regulations in the areas.
“This regulation is clearly illegal, this is absolutely wrong. We will check on similar regulations in other areas,” Gatot added, asserting that the Yogyakarta governor did not want a similar incident to recur in the future.
