Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has backed the government’s decision to ban mass organization Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). “The disbandment is a right move,” Djarot said today at the City Hall.

Djarot said that the HTI may file a lawsuit if it has any objections to the decision.

The Governor said that he has long heard that HTI’s ideology contravenes the Pancasila. According to him, there are other mass organizations that have similarities to HTI. He, however, did not name them. “The Justice and Human Rights Minister, the people and Home Affairs Ministry will conduct assessments. We should not arbitrarily single them out as anti-Pancasila. Seeing their history, the people should already know,” he said.

The Justice and Human Rights Ministry yesterday revoked Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia’s (HTI) legal status.

The decision was based on the regulation in lieu of law no. 2/2017 on mass organizations. The Justice Ministry director general of legal administration Freddy Haris said that the HTI has been banned to prevent violation against the Pancasila and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

The government has stressed that the HTI was not disbanded arbitrarily, but was made as a result of a synergy between state agencies. The HTI is known as an organization that promotes the caliphate system that is viewed as a threat to the national unity.
