TEMPO.CO, Depok - Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said that Indonesia no longer has foreign debt from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that Indonesia has been free from IMF debt since 2006.
"There's no more IMF debt," said Bambang on Tuesday, April 28, 2015.
Bambang said that Indonesia never made any debt in the past nine years and whoever said Indonesia still had debt was mistaken.
"Whoever said that Indonesia still has debt, they must have misquoted," said Bambang.
Bambang's statement supports former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's tweet that said Indonesia has been free of IMF debt.
Previously, the Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (Fitra) rejected SBY's statement that said that Indonesia has been free of IMF debt. Fitra claimed that Indonesia continues to make debt repayment for membership compulsory fee every year.
"The total repayment from 1999 to 2013 was Rp 35 trillion. It is paid by Bank Indonesia every year," said Fitra secretary-general Yenny Soetjipto on Tuesday, April 28, 2015.
Yenny added that every year, IMF, the Asian Development Bank, World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visit Indonesia to submit a promissory note worth Rp 2 to 3 trillion, and IMF receives around 80 percent from the fund.
