Several Buildings in Bali Collapse due to Lombok Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several buildings collapsed and were damaged in Bali province after a magnitude 7 on Richter Scale earthquake rocked Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara province on Sunday night.


"Based on the provisional data, a number of government buildings, malls and a campus were damaged, with their ceiling broken down. The building include the Bali Provincial Police Headquarters, Bali Galeria Mall in Kuta, Dealer Mazda Sunset Road in Kuta, Stikom campus in Renon, Matahari Mall Sudirman, Cathedral Church in Renon, Serela Kuta, and Ngurah Rai Airport," acting chief of the Bali Provincial Disaster Mitigation Board Dewa Putu Mantera said in Denpasar on Sunday night.


The collapsed buildings include a house in front of Hotel Nikki at Dewa Sri Street in Kuta, a house in Dinas Bonyok village, and a number of Hindu shrines, he said.

The quake also caused damage to the ceiling of Sanglah hospital. "The Sanglah hospital needs tents to remove patients who are afraid to stay indoors and we have met the needs for tents to be put up this night," he said.


An earthquake measuring 7.0 on Richter scale rocked West Nusa Tenggara at 6.46 Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) on Sunday.


The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) immediately issued a tsunami early warning following the quake.


The epicenter of the earthquake is located at 8.37 degrees southern latitude and 116.48 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 15 kilometers.
