TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In line with many worrying cases on online lending services, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) encouraged debt collectors from financial technology (fintech) lending services to obtain a special certificate.

OJK spokesperson, Sekar Putih Djarot, stated that the OJK supported Indonesia Fintech Lending Association (AFPI) to carry out the certification process for debt collectors. In this case, OJK demanded AFPI to remind its members to draft code of conduct related to online loan service.

“Membership and certification are required for all parties carrying out billing activities,” said Sekar on Sunday, December 9.

OJK stressed that it would continuously monitor and coordinate with Communication and Informatics Ministry through the Investment Task Force Unit to shut down illegal fintech applications. The institution would also educate the public along with stakeholders about technology-based lending services.

“We keep to open communications with parties on the same concern in dealing with illegal fintech and complaints from the public,” said Sekar.

The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) earlier reported that they received a total of 1,330 complaints regarding Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending. LBH outlined 14 human rights violation conducted by the organizer.

One of the problems was due to minimum protection on users’ personal data in the fintech lending platform. Moreover, as many as 25 out of 89 registered firms in OJK were reported. The complaints were collected from the complaint center opened by LBH Jakarta on November 4-25, 2018.
