TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wetlands International Indonesia Director I Nyoman Suryadiputra was satisfied with Indonesia`s environmental policies under President Joko Widodo`s (Jokowi) four-year leadership.
Suryadiputra said that Jokowi’s strategy has shown that the country’s policies preserving peatlands are on the right track.
“I believe Jokowi’s move has been positive, despite the difficulties upon handling issues regarding peatlands,” he said today, Oct. 23, at a public discussion in South Jakarta.
He said that the challenge that the government faces is to further introduce strict policies under the Government Regulation No. 71/2014 on protecting and overseeing the peatland ecosystem. Another step to take after the establishment of a Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG), according to Suryadiputra, is to further implicate the private sector.
Suryadiputra hopes that the peatland moratorium policy can be made permanent that will lead to the areas being seen as protected areas.
Despite the positive review of Jokowi’s environmental policies, the Yayasan Madani Berkelanjutan that oversees forest and land management is skeptical that Jokowi’s policies would continue if he gets reelected for his second period in office since there are missing Articles regarding environmental issues in the president’s Nawacita program.
