Aceh Ulema Council: MR Vaccine Allowed in Emergency Condition

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Aceh Ulema Council (MPU) chairman Muslim Ibrahim said Measles Rubella (MR) vaccine is allowed in an emergency condition.
“We agree that MR vaccine is haram because it contains pig, but in an emergency context, it is allowed,” said Ibrahim after the consultation meeting regarding MR vaccine in Meuligoe Hall of Aceh Deputy Governor, Wednesday, September 19.
He mentioned MPU Aceh had not yet studied the vaccine because the council regulation was based on the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Edict.

MPU Aceh, he added, also supported MUI's Edict that urging the government to make religious consideration as a procedure to provide immunization and medication.
The Indonesian government and other Muslim countries are urged to concern on the interest of the Muslim community by providing halal drugs and vaccines. “So, if the government finds a halal vaccine, this MR vaccine program must be stopped,” he added.
Meanwhile, Aceh Health Agency head Hanif said the agency and all staffers would conduct the immunization in line with Aceh acting Governor Nova Iriansyah’s order.
“Health Agency will prepare the SOP related to MR immunization campaign. The acting governor says not to give the vaccine to those who reject it,” he explained.
