TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian government will improve the ability of Indonesian workers in the face of the fourth industrial revolution (industry 4.0) based on science, technology, and innovation. Minister of Manpower, Hanif Dhakiri, stated that the technological change will cause the replacement of human labor with engine power, which will have an impact on the reduction of manpower in several sectors.

"Those who are threatened by layoffs will be given training for the transfer of professions," he noted at the Final of Workers League in Student Sports Center of Soemantri, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

The government will create two policies, namely strengthening access and quality of education for vocational training, and preparing training funding and fund assistance for layoff victims.

"We are still formulating the funding system, along with the Ministry of Finance, on whether we will use the concept of social insurance in European countries and Scandinavia, or we will develop our own concept. We still need to do a study," he remarked.

He added that currently 60 percent of the 128 million Indonesian workers are only elementary or junior high school graduates. As a result, when the workers enter the labor-intensive industries, they have no career.

"To have a career, they are given the opportunity to receive training in order to improve their skills and positions, so that they will receive increased wages to improve their welfare," he revealed.
