DPRD asks Anies to hold beer company`s share

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta`s Commission D Legislative Council (DPRD) member Bestari Barus cynically responded to Governor Anies Baswedan`s promise to let go of Jakarta`s shares in beer company Delta Djakarta.

Bestari argues that members of the Jakarta DPRD would first discuss the matter since it touches on the local regulation (Perda). “The regional regulation must be erased first and then submit the proposal to the Home Affairs Ministry,” said Bestari at Jakarta’s City Hall on Wednesday, April 11.

However, Bestari viewed that there is nothing wrong with the city maintaining its shares in the beer company as long as it is beneficial to the citizens of Jakarta since it has been one of many income sources for Jakarta provincial Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD).

“Don’t be hypocritical, every hotel sells beer,” Bestari asserted.

In total, the Jakarta administration currently has 23.25 percent shares in PT Delta, a company that produces alcohol beverages such as Anker, Carlsberg, Kuda Putih, and San Miguel. The city has invested in the beer company since 1970.

Head of Jakarta Financial and Asset Management Agency Michael Rolandi admitted that the plan to divest from PT Delta is to fulfill Anies Baswedan’s campaign promise. However, Michael cannot confirm whether Jakarta’s shares would eventually be divested.
