TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) summoned the director of state-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) to provide an explanation regarding card-skimming cases, particularly in Kediri, East Java. BI Deputy Governor Erwin Rijanto said BRI has promised to address the issue.
Erwin said BRI would reimburse customers’ losses should the cases be proven as skimming.
“We are very concerned [with the issue], because it’s related to the payment system,” Erwin said on Friday, March 16.

Erwin explained, the victims of the case include Simpedes customers, who hold debit cards with a balance below Rp5 million. The debit card still uses magnetic stripes.
BRI, Erwin added, promised to replace the magnetic stripes with the chip technology.
“Based on the case, BRI has made a commitment to accelerate the adjustment," Erwin said.

As of Wednesday, East Java Police received 87 reports from BRI customers saying that the balance in their accounts had been reduced mysteriously. As many as 33 people are the customers of BRI Unit in Ngadiluwih and 54 others are the customers of BRI Purwekerto.
East Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Frans Barung Mangera explained that the victims suddenly received a short message informing that their balances had decreased by Rp500,000 to Rp10 million. The East Java Police has assigned a team from the Special Criminal Investigation Sub-Directorate to assist the investigation conducted by the Kediri Police.
