TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During the rally in support for Palestine and against Donald Trump’s Jerusalem move, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated that Indonesia owes Palestine for being one of the first to acknowledge Indonesia’s independence.
“Brothers and sisters, we owe Palestine. We must continue to support the struggle of the Palestinians,” said Anies on Sunday, December 17. Palestine was the second nation after Egypt to acknowledge Indonesia’s independence.
During his speech, Anies underlined the importance for Indonesians to express that Jerusalem is owned by the Palestinians. He also stated that Indonesia is obliged to free Palestine from Israel’s colonialism as Indonesia’s national constitution states in the first paragraph of the 1945 Constitution.
The rally that was initiated by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) was attended by several State Officials such as the Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly, members of the Indonesian parliament, and Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin.
The solidarity movement for Palestinians was a direct response to US President Donald Trump’s acknowledgment of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 6. The US government is currently preparing to move its Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
