In his first speech after being inaugurated as the Jakarta Governor, Anies mentioned the word pribumi (native Indonesian) that was associated with the colonial era. The speech sparked a debate as some people view that it could promote racism.
The new Jakarta governor clarified that the “pribumi” he referred to in his speech are the people who were oppressed during the Dutch colonial era.
However, the clarification did not stop the people who want to end the debate through a legal process. Among those who filed a police report against Anies is a youth organization called Pengurus Banteng Muda Indonesia (BMI).
The BMI argues that Anies’ statement violated Presidential Instruction No. 26/1998 and Law No. 40/2008.
“We’re here to report Anies Baswedan to the police,” BMI deputy chairman for legal affairs Ronny Talapessy said at the Jakarta Police.
