Environment Ministry: PLTU Jepara Effectively Cuts Pollution

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coal-Fire Power Plant (PLTU) Tanjung Jati B Jepara in Central Java effectively cut air pollution through Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technology.

"The level of efficiency (to cut pollution) reaches 90 percent," Environment and Forestry Ministry’s (LHK) environmental pollution and damage control directorate general MR Karliansyah said in Jakarta on Saturday, Sept. 16.

FGD technology involves limestone solution and sea water to extract sulfur from coal combustion and it generates solid waste in the form of gypsum. 

Karliansyah stated that PLTU Tanjung Jati B Jepara is committed to reducing air pollution from combusting coal. "However, not all PLTU in Indonesia is committed to cut air pollution," he added.

Karliansyah affirmed that the government through LHK Ministry has issued a regulation on emission policy for all industries to anticipate air pollution.
