TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has approved the plan to expand areas covered by the motorcycle restriction policy.
Greater Jakarta Transportation Agency head Bambang Priharono explained that the policy is the perfect solution to limit the number of motorcycles instead of issuing a moratorium on motorcycle sales.
The policy is also aimed to reduce the number of traffic accidents. A study conducted by a consultant appointed by the government suggests that the policy can reduce the number of traffic accidents by 1.12 percent or 6,573 accidents per year.
The policy will not only be applied in Jakarta but also in Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, Tangerang, and South Tangerang. Bambang hopes that the trial can be conducted simultaneously in September 2017.
The trial is expected to be conducted at Jalan Jendral Sudirman in Jakarta, Jalan Jendral Sudirman in Tangerang, Jalan Ir. H. Djuanda and Jalan Raya Serpong in South Tangerang, Jalan Padjajaran in Bogor, Jalan Raya Margonda in Depok, and Jalan Ahmad Yani in Bekasi.
However, some of the local transportation agencies have not yet approved the recommendations. Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri Yansyah approved the motorcycle restriction policy only at Jalan Sudirman, and the Bekasi Transportation Agency views that the policy is not appropriate for Jalan Ahmad Yani since the street does not connect Bekasi and Jakarta.
Meanwhile, the Depok Transportation Agency is not yet ready to apply the restriction due to lack of infrastructures. The agency is concerned that motorists could use private cars if the policy was to be implemented at Jalan Raya Margonda.
