TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Banyuwangi administration, East Java, has confirmed that it will develop green airport concept.
Banyuwangi Regent Abdullah Azwar Anas said that the region boasts a digital society. He said that the administration will not only develop roads but also technology.
As a result, Banyuwangi tourism has gained popularity among both domestic and foreign tourists. Therefore, the administration will revitalize the air transport sector.
“It’s the first green airport in Indonesia; using the ABPD [regional budget]; if we use the APBN, it would cost Rp300 billion; with the APBD, it’s only Rp75 billion,” Abdullah Azwar said yesterday, August 3.

He said that green airport concept will not require an extensive agriculture farm. The agriculture land should be owned by the people, he added. Moreover, the concept will also use interior design products made by locals.
“We want to ensure that green airport will not take up a lot of space, [the land] should instead be used for agricultural landscapes,” said Abdullah.
Direct flights from Jakarta to Banyuwangi have already been established by Lion Air Group and flag carrier Garuda Indonesia. Abdullah said that Garuda will open one more route to Banyuwangi.
“Banyuwangi used to have only one flight route; there are three now because we are the only district that got an A from the Bureaucratic Reform Ministry.”
The Regent said that they will move fast to tap into massive tourism potential. Aside from developing the airport, he will also build more rooms and hotels.
Banyuwangi, a Muslim majority district, will also establish halal tourism. Abdullah said that he will develop a special beach for female tourists.
