Pilot Condition Affect Flight Safety Level: Pilot Association

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Pilot Association (IPI) chairman Rama Valerino Noya said that non-ideal pilot condition was linked to the low safety level of flights in Indonesia.
"The Indonesian [flight] safety level is below that in third-world countries," Rama said on Monday, August 8, 2016.
Rama pointed out that the flight-hour load for Indonesia was higher than the standard one.
"The flight hour should be nine hours a day, but in reality, it could be more than 13 hours a day," Rama explained.
In addition, Rama revealed that contract breach was almost common.
"A pilot should not be recruited as a contractor. The allowed contract duration is two years to fill vacant position," Rama clarified, adding that flight training should not be a part of an employee contract.
Rama added that airlines often misused flight training as an employee contract. Rama explained that flight training was paid by airline companies, which would be billed to the pilot.
"Such a contract is not the same with an employee contract. The law says that the minimum duration of a contract is two years, before being appointed as a permanent employee," Rama said.
IPI advisory board chairman Rudi Roro claimed that the flight safety level in Indonesia would be improve if pilots were in ideal conditions.
"Pilots are high-risk workers. The flight safety level depends on pilot's ideal condition," Rama said.
