Indonesia to Join TPP in 2018

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia plans to focus on joining the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) in the next three years.

"We are ready to join the TPP in maybe three years; a year after our partnership with the European Union," Trade Minister Thomas Lembong said after attending a discussion at the JW Marriot Hotel in Jakarta, Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

According to Thomas, the government is currently focusing on discussing and negotiating an open economic market with the EU. It is estimated that over the next two years the collaboration will complete. The year after that, Indonesia can focus on the TPP.

"We need targets. Imagine if we are given a homework without a deadline; the work will never finish," the minister said.

Thomas said that there are two reasons urging Indonesia to join the TPP. The first is to stay on the same economic pace with other countries, and the second is the fact that Indonesia has its own advantages and the readability to join the TPP.
