TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo said violence against children is still rampant, ranging from child trafficking, discrimination, drugs to sexual abuse. Abuse and neglect of children’s rights can still happen in all places, including homes, schools and other public places.
“School must be a convenient place for children to learn. Stop bullying in schools,” he said on Tuesday, adding that concrete steps must be taken to prevent violence against children.
Jokowi will involve families and schools so that all parties create a safe environment for children’s protection and growth. Jokowi said parents should be able to play their role and function well in guiding their children.
Jokowi stressed the important role of media, especially televisions in preventing violence against children. He said television shows should foster positive spirit and moral values. He also wanted a campaign to raise awareness about violence against children and fulfilling children’s rights.
According to Jokowi, no nation can become respected if that nation cannot pay attention to children as the next generation. Jokowi realizes that there are still many things to do and accomplish to prepare children for their future.
