TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil said he planned to construct 13 towers of apartments for the city’s low-income society (MBR). Ridwan, popularly known as Emil, added the apartment construction was also part of the city administration’s efforts to deal with slums in the West Java’s capital.
Emil said the Bandung administration would team with the Directorate General for Human Settlements (Ditjen Cipta Karya) of the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry.
According to the ministry’s website, Emil has met with Minister Basuki Hadimuljono to discuss the planned construction, which will require funds from the state budget and support from state-owned enterprises in the next five years.
“The Bandung administration will no longer have to look for a legal umbrella to expedite its infrastructure construction programs. Bandung is included in the national strategic areas as the Greater Bandung,” Basuki said on Tuesday, April 7, 2015.
Emil added Bandung was one of the most populated cities after Jakarta, with 13,800 residents per one square kilometer, thus facing problems in terms of housing provision, particularly for the MBR society. Emil said some 28,000 families in Bandung were presently in need of proper housing.
“Therefore, we have surveyed many land plots from the Dutch colonization era where we can build apartments for the people,” he said.
Ditjen Cipta Karya will help the Bandung administration deal with its slum problems this year by channeling funds from the state budget that will be managed by the former.
