TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Child Protection (Komnas PA) filed a civil lawsuit against Jakarta International School (JIS). The lawsuit was followed by a criminal lawsuit that was filed on Friday, May 2.
The school management had been reported based on Article 54 Regulations on Child Protection, which deemed the school to be negligent because they did not prevent a violent act within the school zone as reported by the commission chairman, Arist Merdeka Sirait.
The victim's family had also filed a lawsuit with the South Jakarta District Court. The school had been sued because they have disadvantaged the victim materially and non-materially. It is estimated that the lawsuit’s settlement would reach US$10 million.
During the January-March 2014 period, there were several sexual abuses that took place at JIS. Six people have become suspects for the case. This started from a report from the victim's parents who saw changes in their child's behaviors. It turned out that the child had been sexually abused by the school's cleaners. Recently, there has been another case to the commission that was reported by the victim. According to the commission, the victim claimed that not only was his sexually abused by the cleaners, but also by the school's foreign teachers.
