TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union Confederation (KSBSI), a workers’ organization, has decided to support Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the presidential election.
Jokowi from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle [PDI-P] and Prabowo Subianto from the Great Indonesian Movement Party [Gerindra] have been known as the presidential candidates who have been aggressively approaching workers’ unions to solicit their support.
“We don’t want to be led by a president who violated human rights,” KSBSI president Mudhofir said on Thursday.
He added his organization opted to support Jokowi as it longed for a leader who could uphold human values. “We have agreed and declared our support for Jokowi,” he said.
The KSBSI declared their support for Jokowi on March 27, 2014 after considering a number of issues, with the first being the presidential candidate must be honest and firm. “He has to side with the workers and the poor,” he said.
The KSBSI said it was ready to campaign for Jokowi in 30 provinces once the General Elections Commission (KPU) made an official announcement on which presidential hopefuls were eligible to vie in the presidential race. “We are ready to take to the streets,” said Mudhofir.
