BMKG: Coastal Areas Potential to Flooding During Supermoon

TEMPO.CO, Makassar - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Makassar calls on the residents living in coastal areas to stay alert for 1.4-meter ocean tides during the upcoming supermoon or total lunar eclipse predicted to happen on January 31.

“We call on the public to be aware of flood potential, especially those who live in coastal areas,” said BMKG Makassar head of Observation Ikhsan on Tuesday, January 23.

However, Ikhsan said that the exact height of the ocean tides cannot be predicted considering that coastline characteristic in every region is different.

“We don’t have the reference for the specific height caused by the ocean tides. The maximum tide in each coastal area differs significantly,” said Ikhsan.

The BMKG official further explained that the natural phenomenon can cause seawater flooding that is driven by the heightened ocean tides.
