TEMPO.CO, Kupang - From 2015 to 2019, the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry built seven dams in East Nusa Tenggara, a province with considerably low rainfall. The seven dams will accommodate 188 million cubic meters of water to use for irrigation, raw material, power plants and tourism.

The Ministry's director general of water resources Imam Santoso said the construction of the seven dams cost Rp5.9 trillion.

"It is a very important infrastructure for the people of East Nusa Tenggara who often experience water shortage," he said on Tuesday, January 9.

According to Imam that three dams will be located in in Timor Island, while three will be located in Flores Island.

The dams are part of Joko Widodo's administration's program to build 49 new dams nation-wide. The program is a priority one aimed at developing the state's periphery areas and supporting water and food security.
