TEMPO.CO, Makassar - Bank Indonesia (BI) Deputy Governor Perry Warjiyo said that Indonesia’s sharia economy lags far behind other countries, even behind several countries in Europe.
"Sharia economy development in lags far behind other countries, not only from Islamic countries such as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, but also from non-Islamic countries that even have developed kosher tourism economy," Perry said in Makassar on Friday, August 25, as he attended Sharia Economy Festival (FESyar).
The non-Islamic countries, he continued, include Thailand, Korea, and even Japan. This is ironic considering that Indonesia holds the highest Muslim population in the world. He said that the high number makes us a great market for halal food and numerous sharia products.
He explained that sharia banking products have developed in Indonesia, yet there is a lack of users. As a result, he added, starting from this year, four sharia economy festivals are to be held in Makassar, Medan, Bandung, and Surabaya to educate people on and disseminate the importance of sharia economy development.
