TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - I Wayan Sudirta, lawyer of inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok, said that his team has been preparing an appeal brief for his client following a two-year prison sentence handed down by the panel of judges on May 9.
“We’re expecting [the appeal brief] to be finalized next week,” Wayan said in Jakarta today, May 13.
Wayan did not provide details about the appeal brief. However, he revealed that the appeal brief is related to elements of articles used to charge Ahok and evidence.
“[The appeal brief] will also highlight Buni Yani’s role. He was the one who sparked the controversy but Ahok was the one who gets the prison sentence,” Wayan said.
Ahok was convicted for committing blasphemy when he cited Quran’s Al-Maidah verse 51 during his visit to Thousand Islands back in 2016.
Buni Yani, a lecturer and social media user, uploaded a video footage containing blasphemous remarks made by Ahok. However, Buni Yani claimed that he was not the first who posted the video.
