TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - German researcher Dr. Antje Missbach praised how Indonesians welcomed asylum seekers from countries stricken by conflicts.

"Indonesians showed hospitality by welcoming and treating refugees in a friendly manner," Antje said during a book launch titled Troubled Transit, Asylum Seekers Stuck in Indonesia at Goethe Haus in Jakarta on Thursday, February 23, 2017.

According to the anthropology professor at Monash University, Australia, Indonesian hospitality must be appreciated, since other asylum seekers in other countries face rejection and complex issues.

"I think Indonesian hospitality makes their lives better," Missbach added.

On the other hand, Missbach viewed that hospitality would not be enough to fulfill basic rights of refugees, including the rights to get education and jobs. According to Dr. Missbach, facing uncertain future without jobs and routines could cause suffering among refugees.

The Indonesian government has issued Government Regulation No. 125/2016 on asylum seekers. Antje viewed that the issuance of the regulation is a progress for Indonesia, although many challenges in needs of appropriate attention.

"The regulation rather serves as a technical guide, instead of a proper policy," Missbach added.
