Mount Raung Eruption, Jember Airport Closed Again

TEMPO.CO, Jember - Volcanic ashes from Mount Raung in East Java, again forced authorities to close Notohadinegoro Airport in Jember on Sunday, August 2, 2015.

Head of Technical Operations of Notohadinegoro Airport, Edi Purnomo, told Tempo that the airport was closed between 1:30am and 9am on Sunday, or practically no flights were operating in the airport for the day.

Mount Raung had caused the closure of a number of airports in East Java and Bali since mid-July.

Notohadinegoro airport was re-opened on July 29, however a recent eruption had forced the airport to be closed again.

Based on information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), volcanic ash were visible since August 1, reaching 4,200 meters vertically and moving towards the northwest about 46km and a velocity of ten kilometres per hour.
