IPW: Police Need to Conduct Self-Reflection over Budi Waseso

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) chairman Neta S. Pane said that the petition of “Support Budi Waseso” was initiated to measure public’s supports for the National Police. Neta explained that the number of participants signing the petition would determine whether the public still have a good perception on the law enforcer institution.
“Otherwise, the National Police and Budi Waseso need to conduct self-reflection,” Neta told Tempo on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
Neta and Meliala, a commissioner of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), initiated a petition called “Support Criminal Investigation Directorate head Budi Waseso to enforce the law” revealing Budi’s success in exposing big cases. To this date, the number of participants signing the petition has reached 6,939 people. Neta said that he aimed to collect one million supports in the petition.
Neta added that the petition would not be forwarded to President Joko Widodo.
“No, it only reflects public support that will not affect president’s policy. And so does the petition of ‘Sack Budi Waseso,’” he said.
Neta, in the petition, argued that the other petition was a form of an intervention to the law enforcement. According to Neta, the intervention effort could be initiated by certain people to weaken the National Police and make the situation worse.
