TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - High tides that continuously hit the southern coast of Lumajang Regency has eroded dozens of hectares of paddy fields owned by residents in Tempursari regency, Lumajang, since the past two weeks.
"Sixty hectares braid bars (tanah oloran) and residents’ lands have been inundated by sea water in the past two weeks,” said Secretary of Lumajang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Purwanto, on Saturday, January 31, 2015.
Dozens of hectares of braid bars land hit by the tide of more than 4 meter are located in Tegalrejo village, Tempursari district.
"Even around 20 hectares of land owned by the residents were also affected by abrasion because of the tide,” he said, adding that due to the high tides, residents who managed the land suffered from financial loses and are facing crop failures.
