Telkom Seeks to Pioneer Broadband Network Development

22 December 2014 09:54 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Information Ministry will support state-run telecommuncation firm PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia to become a pioneer in the country's broadband network development.

“We don’t want to hear more complaints about slow internet connection anymore. We are ready to support,” said Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara told Tempo last week.

Based on UNESCO International Telecommunication Union regulations, by 2015 all countries must already have plans for broadband development. They have to have strategies to include broadband as a part of universal access.

Broadband network is defined as accelerated internet access with stable connectivity and information security. In September 18, President Joko Widodo issued a presidential decree on the direction and strategic guidance in expediting and developing broadband.

Rudiantara said the broadband development plans aimed at improving internet access coverage and capacity. “Speed and quota must cover all, including business, residence and border areas.

He hoped Telkom could be able to become a pioneer in implementing Indonesia Broadband Plan program until 2019. “Whoever becomes Telkom president director must have the capacity to turn Telkom into the pioneer of Indonesia broadband plans.”

He added that he had spoken to State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno regarding his plans for Telkom to become the main driver in developing broadband network.

Telkom director Indra Utoyo said he was ready to develop broadband network and its ecosystem in commercial and non-commercial areas, as stated in the national broadband development plans.

However, Indra wants incentives for development compensation in non-commercial areas because Telkom has responsibilities to stakeholders.

Telkom president director Alex Sinaga said the new directors would continue the Indonesia Digital Network (IDN) program in order to participate in Indonesia Broadband Plan 2014-2019. “We will boost IDN and participate in Indonesia Broadband Plan,” he said.
