Minister Initiates 4G Network Development

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Communication and Information Minister Rudiantara said he already hadt he grand design to realize high-speed internet network by building the infrastructure of the fourth generation broadband (4G). Rudiantara projected the project would cost Rp278 trillion (US$23.2 billion) until 2019.
“The network is expected to provide the public with wider access to the Internet,” Rudiantara said at Tempo Economic Outlook seminar on Wednesday, December 10, 2014.
After realizing the high-speed internet connection, Rudiantara will work on access expansion. By 2019, Rudiantara expects that 70 percent of Indonesian households will be connected to the Internet, and 49 percent of rural residences will be familiar with the Internet and supported by high-quality network.
Rudiantara explained that the development of broadband network would be supported by other sectors, including mobile communication industries.
“If [the development is] smooth, this sector can contribute six percent to the national GDP,” he said.
