TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A piece of letter containing Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s handwriting in blue ink is has been circulating on Blackberry Messenger and Whatsapp chat applications recently.
In the letter, Ahok wrote about what he called logical politics. “What is logical politics? That is the willing to lose one’s position for the sake of the public,” Ahok wrote in the letter dated June 25, 2014.
Ahok, soon to be installed as the capital’s top man replacing president-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has recently tendered his resignation from the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party following Gerindra’s intent on scrapping the present direct elections of regional heads.
Ahok added he would not have become a regional head if the elections were carried out by councilors at regional legislative councils (DPRD).
Ahok explained further in the letter that logical politics was possible and that it was the best sort of politics to best serve the interest of the people abiding by the constitution, as apposed to constituents.
“Albeit it is being misunderstood, let history speak for itself that we remain loyal to logical politics,” wrote Ahok.
The sentences, which he wrote almost three months ago in the letter, seem relevant to the circumstances surrounding his controversial resignation from Gerindra Party. Ahok has confirmed that he composed the letter after an interview with a children’s book writer.
