Hatta: Soekarno-Hatta Must Improve Services

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa appreciates the Soekarno-Hatta International's (CGK) recent achievement. The Airport was named as the world's fourth most improved airline by Skytrax—a UK-based consultancy that runs an airline and airport review and ranking site. However, Hatta asks CGK managers not to be complacent.
"The airport still needs to improve many of its services," he said after a coordination meeting in Jakarta, yesterday.
Hatta said the international airport is experiencing an overload that automatically lowers the quality of airport services. "The airport is the vein of the economy, not only to carry passengers, but also goods."
Airport Director of the Transportation Ministry, Bambang Tjahjono, admitted that services at the Soekarno-Hatta airport are below par due to overload. "Therefore, the airport will be expanded," he said yesterday.
According to Bambang, state-owned airport management company Angkasa Pura II has built aprons and expanded terminals extending to 370 square meters. Expansion is necessary asa there is not enough space to serve transiting passengers.
Bambang said, in 2013, the number of passengers at Soekarno-Hatta Airport reached 62 million, whereas the capacity is only 22 million passengers. It is estimated that, in 2020, the number of passengers at the airport could reach 70 million people.
"For the long term, a third runway will be built," he said.
The World Airport Awards are based on 12.85 million customer nominations across 110 nationalities of air travelers, and included 410 airports worldwide. The survey evaluates customer satisfaction across 39 key performance indicators for airport service and product - from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration, through to departure at the gate. The World Airport Awards are the most prestigious accolades for the airport industry, voted by customers in the largest, annual global airport customer satisfaction survey. The survey and awards process is fully independent, guaranteed free of any airport influence or interference in the final results.
Singapore's Changi Airport in Singapore was again voted the World's Best Airport, its second year in a row.
