TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Marie Elka Pangestu, stated that the increasing number of tourists on January 2014 was due to the Chinese Lunar New Year (Imlek) celebration. Therefore, the foreign tourists were dominated by those from China, Hongkong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia.
"Beyond that, tourists from Australia, United States, England, France, and Dutch were also increasing. They might have taken advantage of Dollar's upsurge on Rupiah," said Minister Marie.
Marie stated that January has set up a great bar for the 9.5 million tourists target this year. Other factor that helped improve the number was connectivity, as two foreign airlines, namely Jetstar Airways and Hainan Airlines, have opened a direct route to Indonesia. Furthermore, the rise on tourist numbers was also a courtesy of the Indonesia Fashion Week and Java Jazz Festival, the two international events that took place quite recently.
