TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AOL has announced that Winamp, the digital music file player and visualize for Windows, will be officially discontinued on December 20.
The official announcement was posted on Winamp.com. Winamp's popularity has been rumored to be beaten by Apple's iTunes.
Although it is seen as old-fashioned, Winamp still attracted older generation. Winamp is also a part of software evolution.
"Winamp was a trailblazer in the digital music revolution and iTunes wouldn't exist without the groundbreaking work they did," Michael Robertson, founder of MP3.co, told Mashable yesterday.
In 1999, Nullsoft, founder of Winamp, sold Winamp to AOL for US$80 million or Rp928 billion.
Winamp had been launched for Android in 2010, followed by Mac a year later. Winamp has been disappearing as its official blog has not been updated for a year.
