TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar says that more than ten million people with disabilities are in danger of unemployment and has called on businesses to provide opportunities for the disabled to work.

Muhaimin said that few businesses in the nation hire people with disabilities despite the fact that Indonesia has a large population of disabled people. Based on data from the International Labor Organization (ILO), ten percent of Indonesian citizens are disabled, which is equal to 24 million people. Moreover, the ministry’s records show that only 11 million of these disabled people have jobs.

Law No. 4/1997 on people with disabilities states that the disabled have the right to job opportunities and decent living conditions without discrimination, said Muhaimin. The ministry is currently trying to push for more job opportunities for people with disabilities by holding a special job fair for them. This annual program can help unite companies with the disabled.
