TEMPO.CO, JakartaIPB University Lecturer at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Allen Kurniawan, said the clean water crisis in Jakarta is a complex and multidimensional problem.

Allen emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach since clean water management cannot be separated from waste and pollution management. "One of the causes for a decreasing clean water quality is pollution from the waste entering a body of water,” Allen said in a written statement, on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Allen disclosed several recent innovations in water management technology, including the Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time monitoring.

Allen cited the seawater desalination technology used by Singapore as an example. "Singapore, with limited water resources, has implemented desalination and rainwater treatment technology to reduce dependence on neighboring countries," he said.

The lecturer said nanotechnology has great potential in water purification solutions despite its lack of implementation in developing countries.

Allen also highlighted the need for collaboration between various parties in dealing with this water crisis. “It’s critical for the government, citizens, academics, and the private sector to work together to address the clean water issue. Each party has its own role,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of early public education about the efficient and economical use of water. Currently, Jakarta is highly dependent on water supplies from the Jatiluhur Dam.

However, Allen explained that the quality of water in the dam is degraded due to pollution. “We must evaluate and adjust policies and implement better technology to address the issue (of Jakarta’s clean water crisis),” he said.
