One Killed in Tel Aviv Sunday Blast as US' Antony Blinken Commences Visit in Israel

19 August 2024 19:33 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaA bomb exploded in Tel Aviv, Israel as the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the country. Israeli police were called to Lahi Street at around 08:00 p.m. local time after receiving reports of an explosion.

"It has been confirmed as a bomb explosion," a police spokesperson said. "As a result of the explosion, one person - whose identity is still unknown - was killed, and another person was moderately injured.”

The injured person was taken to hospital for treatment, the police spokesperson said. Images posted on social media showed the aftermath of the explosion. Other videos showed debris on the street and emergency workers at the scene.

The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the blast on Monday, August 19, 2024, as reported by Reuters. The man carrying the bomb, which exploded near a synagogue, was killed. The incident also left a pedestrian injured.

Sunday's blast came about an hour after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Tel Aviv to push for a ceasefire in Gaza that would end the 10-month war between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire is urgently needed amid soaring civilian casualties in Gaza.

Thousands of people gathered in the city's Hostages Square on Saturday to demand the return of the remaining captives still being held by Hamas in Gaza. Families of those still being held are demanding that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resign over the current hostage deal.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has demanded Netanyahu be impeached over the hostage-taking, writing in X, "His disobedience to the law at such a time justifies the declaration of impeachment. unfit!"
