Kamala Harris, Donald Trump to Face Off in First Presidential Debate in Pennsylvania

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will face former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump in their first presidential debate on Tuesday, September 10 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In what is expected to be a heated match-up, the two candidates will be given 90 minutes to debate on issues of great concern to Americans, including the nation's economy, abortion control, immigration laws, and reproductive rights.

The rules for the 2024 presidential debate are designed to pit Harris and Trump one-on-one with no outside distractions. There will be no studio audience, and the candidates will not be allowed to have pre-written notes or props on stage.

Harris and Trump will also not be permitted to question each other directly, according to media reports. In addition, their microphones will be muted when the other candidate speaks.

However, reports say ABC, which will broadcast the debate live, will have the option to unmute both candidates' microphones if producers believe there is "significant crosstalk" on the issues being covered.

Trump won his first debate against Vice President Joe Biden. But since Biden dropped out of the race and Harris stepped in as the Democratic nominee, Trump is now facing a very different opponent: a fierce debater and former federal prosecutor.

Most polls suggest that Harris and Trump are running neck-and-neck in crucial swing states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. That makes Tuesday's debate a big deal, especially for voters who are still undecided between the two candidates.

There is no information on whether Harris and Trump will have a second debate. However, Harris's running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Trump's running mate, Ohio State Senator JD Vance, will square off in their first vice presidential debate on October 1.
