TEMPO.CO, Kolkata - India's Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI has arrested Sanjay Roy, the alleged perpetrator of the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, India. The case has sparked nationwide protests, causing health services to be paralyzed.

The perpetrator will undergo psychological and behavioral analysis. A team of analysts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi has arrived in Kolkata to conduct the necessary tests.

The CBI has questioned Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former head of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident of alleged rape and murder of the intern doctor took place. The agency took Ghosh in for questioning on Friday and underwent further questioning till 1:40am on Saturday, August 17, 2024.

The 31-year-old graduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of a government hospital. Her body was found on August 9. The alleged culprit is Sanjay Roy, a civilian volunteer, who has been arrested in connection with the case.

The victim's parents have filed a suit in the Calcutta High Court, seeking a court-supervised inquiry into the case. Several other public interest lawsuits were also filed, demanding a CBI investigation into the incident.

Preliminary autopsy reports indicate that the victim was sexually assaulted and murdered. The victim had bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. There were also injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.

Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, who joined the police force as a civilian volunteer in 2019. Police alleged that the accused had been married at least four times and was known to be a serial cheater.

The accused, who was a trained boxer, was close to several senior police officers over the years. After which he was transferred to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posted to a police post at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The case has triggered a mass strike of doctors in India.  A number of hospitals and clinics across India on Saturday, August 17, 2024, refused to accept patients, except for emergency cases. The refusal was made because health professionals in India went on strike for 24 hours in protest at the brutal rape and murder of a doctor in the eastern city of Kolkata.

More than one million doctors in India are expected to go on strike, paralyzing health services in one of the most populous countries. Hospitals in India said staff from health faculties had been deployed to attend to emergency cases.
