BMKG: Two Earthquakes Jolt Kuningan, Triggered by Ciremai Fault

25 July 2024 21:58 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kuningan Regency, West Java, experienced two earthquakes on Thursday, July 25, confirmed the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The first quake, with a magnitude of 3.6, struck in the morning, followed by a stronger 4.1 magnitude tremor in the evening. Both quakes originated on land.

Residents in Kuningan and surrounding areas felt the tremors, causing widespread anxiety. One X social media user, @a_yoza, expressed fear and confusion after being jolted awake by the morning earthquake.

The second earthquake, centered one kilometer southeast of Kuningan at a depth of five kilometers, occurred at 17:36:41 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). “This shallow crust earthquake was confirmed to be caused by the active Ciremai Fault,” Daryono, head of the agency’s quake and tsunami center, said in a written statement.

He added that this was part of a series of the morning quake which occurred at 04:01 WIB and was centered three kilometers southeast of Kuningan Regency at a depth of six kilometers.

“Ciremai Fault has the potential for a maximum magnitude of 6.5 with a fault slip rate of 0.1 millimeters per year,” Daryono explained.

According to the BMKG’s data, the evening quake was felt up to intensity III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale (MMI) in Kuningan, while the morning quake registered between II and III MMI. Initial reports indicate minor damage to several houses.
