Bromo Tourists Urged to Be Fire Cautious During Dry Season

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) remains susceptible to forest and land fires. Tourists visiting Mount Bromo and its surrounding areas are strongly advised to be aware of the potential for wildfires, especially during this dry season.
Septi Eka Wardhani, Head of the Administrative Department of the TNBTS Center, confirmed the ongoing dry period and lack of recent rainfall. She cautioned visitors and tourists against any activities that could trigger forest fires, such as starting campfires or engaging in other risky behavior.
“Please prioritize your safety and refrain from starting fires or engaging in any activities that could spark a forest fire,” she said in Malang, East Java, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, as reported by Antara.
Open Command Posts
In anticipation of potential wildfires, Septi added that the TNBTS Center has established Command Posts (Posko) strategically around high-risk areas. These posts are staffed by officers who can be promptly contacted by residents or tourists who witness a fire.
“We have opened posts around fire-prone areas, and our officers are on standby. Should a fire occur, or if visitors identify a fire in progress, please report it immediately to our personnel in the field,” she instructed.
Previous Fire Incident on Mount Batok
On Saturday, June 22nd, a forest fire erupted on Mount Batok within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area. The blaze was extinguished by 9:55 p.m. through a joint effort by the Fire Care Community (MPA), the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the Forest Police Partner Community (MMP), and the Regional Disaster MMitigation Agency (BPBD) from various regions.
Mount Bromo is a leading tourist destination in East Java. In 2023, the park, recognized as the third most beautiful in the world, welcomed 368,507 visitors, including 355,297 domestic tourists and 13,210 international tourists. Tourism in this region generated significant Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) of Rp14.70 billion.
