TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Smallpox, a highly contagious disease, is often surrounded by misconceptions and rumors. Hanny Nilasari, General Chair of the Indonesian Dermatology and Venereology Specialist Doctors Association (PERDOSKI), urges the public to maintain proper hygiene and seek medical advice to prevent the spread of infection.
“It is essential to prioritize cleanliness, including showering twice daily and using prescribed topical medications to prevent the infection from spreading,” Hanny said on Friday, August 30, 2024.
She explained that smallpox sufferers are advised to avoid scratching their skin lesions and keep wounds dry. Large, open wounds should be covered with gauze to minimize contamination. Additionally, maintaining hand and nail hygiene is equally important.
The Chair of the KSM Dermatology and Venereology at RSCM-FKUI noted that individuals who have recovered from smallpox remain susceptible to reinfection. “Especially those with weakened immune systems due to skin diseases, autoimmune conditions, HIV, or other factors,” she added.
Mpox Concerns
Regarding the recent surge in Mpox cases, Hanny advises the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience skin infections. While mild cases of Mpox can often be managed through self-isolation, it is crucial to ensure appropriate home conditions for minimizing contact with others. Regular communication with healthcare professionals is also essential during self-isolation.
“A comprehensive examination and laboratory testing will be conducted to confirm the diagnosis of Mpox,” Hanny said.
