TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan has announced that he is considering forming a new political party in response to the numerous aspirations he has received from supporters following his unsuccessful bid in the 2024 regional elections.
In a video on his YouTube channel uploaded on Friday, August 30, 2024, Anies expressed his openness to creating a new mass organization or party. “Perhaps, that’s the path we will take. We'll see,” he said.
He emphasized that this decision is driven by a desire to accommodate the diverse aspirations of the community, which seek greater equality, a healthier democracy, and a political party that prioritizes ideas.
He believes that these aspirations provide a strong foundation for establishing a new political party. “Hopefully, we can implement these concrete steps in the near future,” he remarked.
In the video, Anies also criticized the tendency of party elites to nominate regional head candidates who do not align with the aspirations of the local community. He highlighted the Constitutional Court's decision, which has opened up opportunities for parties to better reflect the wishes of the community.
“Regional elections should reflect regional aspirations, not national interests,” he stressed.
The video serves as his response to his failure to advance in the 2024 Jakarta regional election. Despite initial support from several parties, including PKS, NasDem, and PKB, these parties ultimately joined the Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM Plus) and endorsed Ridwan Kamil-Suswono.
Moreover, Anies Baswedan's hopes of securing a nomination from the PDIP were dashed when the party chose to support its internal cadres, Pramono Anung and Rano Karno, even though their names are not prominent in opinion polls.
