TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has announced that it will summon President Jokowi's son, Kaesang Pangarep, for questioning regarding allegations of receiving private jet facilities as gratuities during a trip to the United States. KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata stated that the summons letter will be sent shortly.
“The letter is currently being drafted,” Alex said at the KPK's Building in South Jakarta on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Alex explained that the summoning process for Kaesang is a standard procedure at the anti-corruption agency. “If we receive information from the public, we typically invite them for clarification. In cases related to reports of gratuities, we invite individuals through the Gratification Directorate of the Prevention Deputy,” he said.
Before issuing the summons, he noted that Kaesang had publicly declared or explained the matter. However, he emphasized that this declaration would not necessarily preclude the KPK from conducting its own investigation.
Kaesang was previously requested to declare the rental of the private jet before being summoned for clarification. He was also expected to provide supporting evidence if the facility was not related to his family's position.
“We hope that when making a declaration, Kaesang will accompany it with evidence, such as proof of payment to help clarify any questions that may arise in the public sphere,” he added.
Alex also said that the KPK encouraged the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) to serve as a role model for anti-corruption values. “We urge Kaesang to embody anti-corruption values in his daily behavior and as the head of a political party. One such value is living a simple lifestyle.”
Recently, a video circulating on social media showed Kaesang and his wife, Erina Gudono, using a Gulfstream private jet during their trip to the United States. The public has questioned the source of this luxurious facility, with suspicions pointing to Garena Online (Private) Limited, a subsidiary of SEA Limited, which also oversees Shopee.
E-commerce giant, PT Shopee Internasional Indonesia, is known to have collaborated with the Solo City Government in 2021, led by Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Kaesang Pangarep's older brother. The agreement involved establishing an office and gaming center on Solo Government land.
