TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia Usman Hamid urged the police to find the perpetrator behind the shooting of Papuan human rights activist Yan Christian Warinussy. Yan Warinussy was shot by an unknown attacker in Sanggeng, West Manokwari on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Usman said the shooting targeted Yan’s work, as he is a lawyer and long-time human rights activist in Papua. “Therefore, Amnesty International Indonesia urges authorities to find the attacker,” said Usman in a written statement on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

He also said that Yan’s shooter must be brought to justice. "Amnesty International condemns the shooting of Yan Warinussy," he said.

The Director of the Legal Aid Institute or LBH Sisar Matiti, Yohanes Akwan, confirmed the shooting incident. "We suspect that it’s a terror attack, as an unknown perpetrator shot Mr. Warinussy out of nowhere, said Akwan.

According to him, the shooting occurred shortly after Yan Warinussy left the ATM booth located on Jalan Yos Sudarso, Sanggeng, Manokwari. "After leaving the ATM and about to return to the car with his family, he was suddenly shot by silent gunfire," he said.

Yan’s family immediately rushed him to a hospital in Manokwari. Yohanes said the bullet that hit Yan Warinussy had been removed.

"It's suspected to be air rifle bullets," he said. Evidence in the form of bullet projectiles has been handed over to the police.
