WhatsApp Collaborates with Tanla to Detect, Prevent Scams

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - WhatsApp has signed a collaboration agreement with communications services company Tanla Platforms to identify fake phone numbers. The partnership is designed to bolster efforts to combat scams on the messaging platform, an executive close to WhatsApp said.

"Given that WhatsApp is an end-to-end encrypted channel, external signals are critical for the platform to proactively identify and remove fraud accounts before a user falls into the trap of fraudulent messages or suspicious web links," the source was quoted as saying by The Economic Times, July 13.

He added that banking and telecom channels that handle customer service through SMS and voice calls can provide these important insights to leading platforms like WhatsApp, and therefore this collaboration will weed out criminals.

As per the partnership, Tanla's AI-based anti-phishing solution, Wisely ATP, which collects information on 10-digit numbers and malicious URLs, will share real-time signals on fraud trends with WhatsApp. WhatsApp will act on the anonymously shared data after conducting due diligence.

As mandated by the Indian telecom regulator, telecom companies are required to implement artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) solutions to detect suspicious SMS senders.
