KPU Ensures to Adopt Constitutional Court Decision for Regional Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Commission (KPU) has confirmed that the registration of regional head candidate pairs for the 2024 Regional Elections will be governed by the KPU regulations (PKPU) supplemented with new provisions in accordance with the Constitutional Court decision issued on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. This decision follows previous consultations with Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR).
“We will ensure that the registration process on August 27-29 adheres to the regulations and incorporates the Constitutional Court's decisions,” stated KPU Chairman, Mochammad Afifuddin, at his office on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
Afif added that the Constitutional Court's decision, reflected in the latest draft revision of the PKPU, covers not only the age requirements for candidates and the nomination threshold as outlined in Constitutional Court Decisions Number 60 and 70 of 2024 but also campaign regulations in universities, which the Constitutional Court has modified.
“We must definitely adhere to these decisions and promptly integrate them into our campaign regulations,” he remarked.
He also said that the KPU will follow up on the Constitutional Court's decision through a systematic process, beginning with consultations with the DPR. This approach aims to avoid sanctions for procedural errors, as experienced in the previous election cycle.
In the previous election, the KPU adopted the Constitutional Court's decision to accommodate the registration of Gibran Rakabuming Raka, President Jokowi's eldest son, as a vice presidential candidate. However, this decision was later deemed in violation of the Constitutional Court's code of ethics.
The current Constitutional Court decision effectively closes the door for Kaesang Pangarep, Jokowi's youngest son, to run in the regional elections. This outcome has prompted the DPR and government to consider a sudden revision of the Regional Law, leading to a significant public demonstration on Thursday, August 22.
“We have, of course, learned from our past mistakes and will take corrective measures. We will strictly adhere to the procedural steps outlined in the Constitutional Court's decision,” Afif added.
He further stated that the KPU will actively coordinate with the DPR Commission II to expedite the consultation process. The hearing is scheduled for next Monday, one day before the opening of regional head candidate registration.
“The hearing is scheduled for Monday (August 26). We have already conveyed and submitted the draft and other necessary materials [for the discussion],” Afif concluded.
